A long-term project for southern Madagascar

Vara Mada is an early-stage project in the Atsimo-Andrefana region, designed to transform natural resources into lasting benefits for communities, for the region, and for Madagascar.
We are committed to transparency, dialogue, and international standards at every step.

Over the years

The Vara Mada project has evolved over time. What matters today is how it is being developed : a new approach, new standards, and a long-term vision. And a focus on long-term value, responsibility and alignment with local realities.

2024

New ownership and project reset

Energy Fuels acquired the project and initiated a new phase, strengthening governance, aligning with international standards and placing dialogue with communities at the center of the approach.

2020–2023

Technical studies and project development

During this period, technical, environmental and project design work continued to refine the project and prepare for its long-term development.

2019

Environmental and social studies completed

The project obtained its environmental permit following a full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), establishing a first framework for responsible development.

The Next Steps

The project is entering a new phase. Construction can only begin once key conditions are met and validated

2026–2027

Final approvals and preparation

Finalisation of the investment agreement and updated environmental studies, alongside continued technical work and community engagement.

2028–2030

Construction and start of operations

Construction phase followed by the progressive start of operations, once all regulatory and environmental conditions are fully met.

How does it work

Low-impact extraction

Mineral sands are extracted without explosives or chemicals, using methods designed to limit environmental impact.

Natural separation processes

Minerals are separated using gravity and magnetic processes, avoiding chemical transformation and reducing risk of contamination.

Progressive land rehabilitation

After extraction, land is restored step by step, allowing it to be returned to productive use within a few years.

Did you know?

No chemicals are used

The process relies on gravity and magnetic separation not chemicals.

Most of the material is returned to the ground

Around 94% of extracted material is returned after processing.

Water is carefully managed

Water is recycled and monitored to protect local resources.

Mining is temporary, land restoration is long-term

Land is progressively restored and can be used again within a few years.

Location

The Vara Mada project is located in the Atsimo-Andrefana region, near Toliara in southern Madagascar.

The project operates within a defined and regulated perimeter, taking into account nearby communities, ecosystems and environmental constraints.

Project base

Project Hightlights

The project is designed as a long-term economic and social driver for the region and Madagascar.
